Santhal-The Tribe
A Brief Introduction
Standing tall and across the globe with a population surpassing any single tribe of India by a volume of 1 Crore, Santhals are the largest group of indigenous tribe in India. We belong to the pre-Aryan era, when no one even knew that India existed. Our tribe is found in the regions of Jharkhand, Assam, Bihar, Chattisgarh, Meghalaya, Orissa and West Bengal. Internationally, we have a huge concentration of our tribe in Bangladesh as well as Nepal.
History
Very few people are aware with the fact that the first act of rebellion against the British rule was initiated by the Santhal warriors as early as 1789 by Baba Tilka Majhi. Though, the entire saga of its impact has been overshadowed by the 1857 Rebelion, but the legendary heroics of the Santhal fighters lives on through folk tales and oral stories as a major event in the identity and pride of the tribe.
Language & Script
Santhali or Santali is the primary language, which is spoken by the Santhals. The script for this language is called Ol-Chiki, which is developed by Pandit Raghunath Murmu. The language has been included in the 8th Schedule of the Indian Constitution that deals with the recognition of languages.
